Shiva Mahimna Stotra

शिवमहिम्नस्तोत्रम्

The magnificent Sanskrit hymn composed by Pushpadanta that glorifies the infinite greatness of Lord Shiva — one of the most beloved stotras across all Shaivite traditions.

What is Shiva Mahimna Stotra?

The Shiva Mahimna Stotra is a magnificent Sanskrit hymn composed by Pushpadanta (a Gandharva) that glorifies the infinite greatness of Lord Shiva. It is one of the most beloved and widely recited Shiva stotras across all Shaivite traditions.

According to legend, Pushpadanta was a celestial musician who unknowingly trespassed upon a garden of flowers dedicated to Shiva. When cursed for this transgression, he composed this extraordinary hymn of 43 verses in praise of Shiva's boundless glory, and through its power, was freed from the curse. The stotra stands as a testament to the transformative power of sincere devotion and poetic surrender.

Sacred Verses

"O Lord, if even the praise offered by Brahma and other gods falls short of your true greatness, then everyone is free to praise you to the limit of their understanding — and so this effort of mine, too, is beyond reproach."

"Your greatness transcends the reach of both speech and mind. Even the Vedas describe you only by negation — 'not this, not this.' Who then can truly praise you? Yet whose mind and speech do not fall at your feet in adoration?"

Spiritual Significance

The Shiva Mahimna Stotra occupies a revered place in Hindu devotional literature as one of the finest expressions of Shaivite philosophy and bhakti. The hymn weaves together mythological narratives, philosophical insights, and heartfelt devotion to paint a comprehensive portrait of Shiva's transcendent nature.

Pushpadanta's genius lies in acknowledging the impossibility of fully describing Shiva's greatness while simultaneously offering one of the most eloquent descriptions ever composed. Each verse illuminates a different facet of Shiva — as the destroyer of Tripura, the drinker of poison, the cosmic dancer, the ascetic supreme, and the bestower of grace.

The stotra teaches the profound lesson that sincere devotion, offered with humility and love, is always accepted by the Lord regardless of the devotee's limitations. It remains a cornerstone of daily worship and special ceremonies across Shaivite traditions worldwide.
